ALBERTA FERRETTI – MARCHESA CASATI

Casati

was the type of woman to be unforgettable and was both a muse as well as art collector and patron in her own right – she was friends with key figures of the Symbolists, Fauves, Futurists and Surrealists. Even her big cats were transformed into bold jewels by Cartier.

Painted by Augustus John, sculpted in bronze by many, she made a lasting impression on each series of artists who encountered her. The Poet Gabriele d’Annunzio was extremely enamoured by the Marchesa and the affair they had changed both their lives and art

Venice was the perfect setting for the eccentric and decadent Marchesa who inhabited the long white Palazzo right on the Grande Canal that is now the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. A 2015 a full retrospective exhibition at the Palazzo Fortuny was dedicated to her – who else had portraits by each and every artist of her era -from large scale oils to a series of photographs by Man Ray? The same year the Marchesa was also the theme of the Bauer Hotel’s immersive Carnival party of the season, where many of her most striking looks were recreated on performers, walking and dancing amoung the guests, to bring her back to life.

The spirit of the Divine Marchesa

continues to inspire artists and leading couture houses today, as is evident in this stunning short film from the Italian house of Alberta Ferretti. Ferretti is known for their romantic gowns, and here the imagery of the Marchesa’s life iconography is reconstructed from her panthers to the live snakes she would wear as necklaces.

Her role is played by the top model Malgosia Bela whose striking angularity echoes the Marchesa’s own artistically hollowed features, which she emphasized with circles of charcoal kohl and dark red vamp lips. Ferretti’s incredible craftsmanship and skill in fringing and beading is seen in exquisite over gowns of feathers, silk, fur, brocade… All perfect raiment for this expression of the Marchesa, who lives in a shadowy palazzo right inside which trees grow. As the mists rise she takes to the water, floating dreamily through the waters in full regalia… A vision of a visionary women of Venice, a film brings back to life a true Venetian original.

You can visit the Alberta Ferretti Boutique just moments away from the BAUER Hotel towards San Marco Square.
